You know it’s got the benefits and keeps you healthy. There’s just one problem - you dislike drinking water. If a tall, cold glass of water doesn’t sound appealing to you, staying hydrated can be a problem. Water helps our circulation, rids our body of toxins, prevents constipation, helps us feel better, and simply keeps us alive! Thankfully, there are ways to stay hydrated throughout the day without drinking straight glasses of tap water or resorting to sugary, unhealthy drinks.
1. Reach For the Sparkling and Infusion. There has been some debate over whether or not sparkling water is just as good for you as regular water, but most experts agree that the bubbly option is just as hydrating. Even though it’s not sweet, sparkling waters are a nice way to switch it up from simply drinking still water all day. For people that don’t love drinking water, it’s often because it’s bland and boring. Try infusing your water with things like berries, mint, or cucumber to help make it more enticing and flavourful. Plus, not only will keep you hydrated but also vitamins and nutrients in selected fruits and vegetables may be absorbed when placed in water for a couple of hours or left overnight.
2. Find a Tea Flavour You Love. The great thing about tea is that it doesn’t taste anything like water. Even though, when it comes down to it, it’s just flavoured water. But, hey! Whatever works. Plus, it’s packed with phytochemical and antioxidants. Make sure it’s decaf though because caffeine can have dehydrating effects.
3. Eat Your H2O. On average 20% of hydration comes from the foods we eat. Fruits and veggies are full of H2O. Try and choose fruits and vegetables that are high in water content like melons, tomatoes, cabbage, celery, or strawberries. Even something as simple as milk on your cereal will help towards keeping you hydrated!
4. Cut Back on Alcohol. Yes, alcohol can dehydrate you! It causes your body to remove fluids from your blood through your renal system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, and bladder, at a much quicker rate than other liquids. 5. Drink Coconut Water. It’s tasty, it’s hydrating, and it’s loaded with potassium and electrolytes. It’s a hydrating gift from mother nature. Just be sure you’re drinking pure coconut water containing no added sugars. Coconut water is claimed to be a heart healthy drink because of its potassium content. Potassium has been shown to lower blood pressure in people with hypertension (high blood pressure). However, While potassium is beneficial for lowering blood pressure, gulping lots of coconut water is not the best source; a balanced and varied diet high in fruits and vegetables will suffice. Coconut water should be enjoyed as a casual beverage only.
Drinking enough water throughout the day can be difficult, especially if you’re someone that doesn’t enjoy tap water. But it’s important to at least be making an effort to stay hydrated, even if it means trying a few little tricks. Remember, sipping fluids regularly will hydrate you more effectively than gulping it down all at once. Also, go for room temperature drinks as ice cold drinks are less effective at hydrating you.
